Commissioner's Special 2-9-2017 | A short history of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society The Society is a member-based organisation, founded in 1955. Its initial purpose was to save, and restore to service, part of the Victorian Government's recently closed 2' 6" narrow gauge railway line from Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook. The line was re-opened from Belgrave to Menzies Creek in 1962, Menzies Creek to Emerald in 1965, Emerald to Lakeside in 1975 and Lakeside to Gembrook in 1998. During this time, restorations of key locomotives and rolling stock were also undertaken and funded by the Society, as well as the establishment of the Menzies Creek Museum in 1964 and then funding of a new building after 2010. |
